Start by putting your PC to sleep using Wizmo. Although I have my computer set to hibernate when it’s been idle for 20 minutes, if I know I’m leaving or away from the computer, with one click I can send my PC to bed: Wizmo hibernate
In addition to my computer, I have a number of other devices plugged in to my ups (battery backup). So before hitting bed each night a simple push on the ups off button and I can put all those devices to bed too. Try it, you might be surprised when you get your next electric bill.
