SpeedFan it’s geeky and cool.

The number one enemy of any computer, other than a physical drop, is HEAT! All computers generate heat and the faster your computer processor the more heat it’s likely to generate. Computers are constructed to mitigate this heat, most through the use of fans. Depending on your computer model, it could have one, two, three or more fans. Almost all computers have a system fan designed to move air through your computer case. Some have a separate fan just for your processor and others fans for your hard drives and possibly additional fans for the system. Should these fans stop working, heat can rapidly build up and actually do damage to your computer parts, e.g. your processor, motherboard, hard drives or other internal chips.

SpeedFan to the rescue.

So how do you know if these fans are working? Well for desktop computers, the system fan can be viewed from the rear of the case and one can quickly determine if it’s moving. But what if it’s running but not at the recommended speed? And internal fans and laptop computer fans are more difficult to diagnose. So to quickly check on the status of your computers cooling systems you can take advantage of various free utilities. One in particular is SpeedFan.  You don’t need to keep this constantly running. Just fire it up regularly and check to see if your fans are working and if your computer is COOL!

Remember, heat is the enemy so don’t let your computer accumulate dust as it prevents air flow and increases heat. For desktop computers, don’t locate them inside enclosures with doors. This prevents air flow. Keep your computer elevated if possible as the majority of dust is stirred up as we walk on carpets and floors. And remember to fire up SpeedFan to check out your system and keep it cool!
